RCAMS PROGRAMME

Training of Trainers (ToT)

The ToT course is a long term training course and takes place over the course. It targets newcomer trainers who want to work internationally and puts a focus on all six areas of the ETS Competence Model for Trainers. The main goal is to train trainers who are motivated to take part in continually improving the quality of projects under the Erasmus : Youth in Action Programmer.

Within the ToT course, participants have the chance to further develop their competences as a trainer. In line with the Canadian  Training Strategy, ToT considers the following competences as essential when working as a non-formal education trainer  within  RECAMS : Youth in Action:

Understand and facilitate individual and group learning processes.

Design educational programmers.

Direct one's own learning (Learning to Learn)

Co-operate successfully in teams.

Communicate meaningfully with others.

Intercultural Competence.

Participants enter the ToT course from various levels of prior experience and bring along a portfolio of competences - consequently, their learning needs are different. The educational approach implemented in the ToT course intends to allow for these different learning needs to be identified and pursued. At the core of this process is the competence of the participant to direct his/her own learning. The group as a source for peer learning and the trainers as facilitators of these learning processes are essential pillars of this approach.

The ToT course lasts a year and consists of:

three residential seminars

an international training project you design and run with other participants

ongoing e-learning

ongoing mentoring with one of the course trainers as your mentor

learning commitments

Current ToT Course

This course requires participants to invest a considerable among to: in total you should allow for at least 54 days:

27 seminar days (including travel)

12 days overall for the training project (preparatory work, prep meeting and the course itself)

15 days for following the personal learning commitments, online work, peer learning, mentor talks etc.

Participants are expected to

have already been involved at least three times in a team of trainers designing, implementing and evaluating a training course in the framework of non-formal education

have international experience in the youth work field with a function of responsibility (not only as a participant) – organizing international youth projects, leading a youth exchange, mentoring volunteers, etc.

have the potential and need to develop training competences and act after the course as a trainer for North American Youth in Action projects and/or for training courses organized by the National Agencies of the Rcams: Youth in Action programmer

show initiative and willingness to self-direct their own learning process

be prepared to reflect upon and question their own beliefs and approaches as trainers

be able to run training courses in English.

The ToT courses are delivered by a Canadian trainers team consisting of .

Participants are selected by the National Agencies of the rcams: Youth in Action Programmed which covers the expenses related to the participation in the course (travel, board and lodging, fee). Participation fees need to be checked with your National Agency, they might differ from country to country.

Methodology
Concerning the method used in the training, Outward Bound offers course participants the opportunity to actively explore themselves and their relations with others. At the heart of this process is ‘experiential education’ or learning by doing. At Outward Bound, as in our daily lives, changes in behavior and in understanding occur as a result of the practical experience of coping with real-life situations or problems. This is a learning process which engages the whole of the learner’s person - intellectually, emotionally, as well as physically. Our outdoor activities are unique and exciting. But we believe that it's not enough to merely be active together as a group: in order for real learning to take place, action needs to be grounded in reflection. We don’t do any outdoor activities just for the 'kick' reflection are channeled back into action. The experiential learning cycle we used during the whole training is based on plan-do-review.
 For theoretical inputs we use two methods: the inductive and the deductive way. In some cases theoretical models are presented first and the experiences are reviewed with the help of these models, in other cases models are deducted from the experience itself. In the third part of the training participants organize scenarios and through meta-reflection sessions they get feedback both from their colleagues and the trainers.

Becoming a good manager can be challenging; it's not just about inputs and outputs. You'll need to make key strategic decisions, often without complete information, which will seriously affect your company's direction. In the Business Administration – Management program, you'll learn all about these types of situations and acquire the knowledge to make smart decisions.

Program Description

Pilot Training

The way that we travel has changed dramatically in the last few decades. Air travel, which was initially something that was done occasionally, is now becoming a favored mode of travel, especially for people who are in international business and need to travel on a regular basis. Air travel has now become more affordable and frequent and as a result, the need for trained pilots has risen.

The employment scope for pilots has also increased tremendously. Pilots can find jobs in government services, as commercial pilots, rescue pilots or pilots for private aircrafts. There is also a demand for pilots who can fly ski planes and seaplanes as well.

Programs that teach pilot training will cover a wide range of subjects and will require that students log in the required number of hours of airtime as part of the practical assessment. These programs will teach students about how to become familiar with flying as well as teach them basic maneuvers. Students will also learn how to prepare for a flight, taking into consideration weather conditions and an assessment of the plane to make sure it is in the proper condition to fly. Students will also learn about ancillary cockpit controls, aircraft taxiing, attitudes and movements while airborne, straight and level flying, turns, climbs, descents, calculating maximum range and endurance, slow flight, stalls, spiral dives, spinning, the hazards of flying in wind drifts, side slipping, take offs, landings, precautionary landings, pilot navigation, forced landings, emergency procedures, instrument flying and radio communication.

Flight Training

Profile of Career College

Aircraft Safety & Critical Incident Training:

Learn to identify and manage situations that may threaten the safety of the aircraft, crew, and passengers.

Aircraft Systems:

The Boeing 737-700, Airbus 320, Boeing 767-300, Boeing 747-400 will be studied in this course. For each aircraft, you will learn about operation of cabin doors and over-wing exits, galley electrical systems, oxygen systems, emergency lighting, communication systems, master panels/ordinance signs, passenger seating/controls, and lavatories.

Emergency Procedures Training:

Occupational Health & Safety Management

Program Information

The Occupational Health & Safety Management Ontario College Graduate Certificate program is a multi-disciplinary program that is designed to encompass a broad range of knowledge in occupational health, safety and environmental management systems that are critical to an organizations success. This program provides students with a strong health and safety foundation by developing the competencies required for the effective development, implementation and evaluation of health and safety systems in occupational settings. Program Information

The Occupational Health and Safety Ontario College Certificate provides students with the knowledge and skills required to monitor and assess the safety of people at work and related workplace hazards. In addition to the fundamentals, students will explore the management skills required to support and lead workplace safety programs. Under the Occupational Health and Safety Act, workplaces must prepare, and review at least annually, a written Occupational Health and Safety policy and maintain a program to implement that policy. This certificate program is designed to assist participants in fulfilling this legal requirement by providing guidelines and assistance in defining Health and Safety objectives and developing policies and procedures. This program will interest individuals with responsibility for Health and Safety (e.g. Supervisors, Safety Coordinators, Occupational Health Nurses, Joint Health and Safety Committees, etc.) that require broader legal and technical knowledge to function effectively in their occupation.

Palliative Care Concepts

Program Information

Palliative care aims to relieve suffering and improve quality of life for those who are living with and/or dying from a progressive life-limiting illness. The Concepts of Palliative Care, Board of Governors Certificate is a flexible delivery, part-time, online program designed to provide students with the specialized knowledge, skills and attitudes required to be involved with caring for a person with a life-limiting illness and their families. Curriculum is delivered online from caring, experienced Palliative Care faculty. Students can expect to begin their learning in important topics such as an overview of palliative care coping with death, dying and grief and the available resources, both in home and through institutional care. Subsequent courses will delve into the quality of remaining life, empathetic and sensitive care, effective communication techniques, ethical, legal and spiritual concerns, psychological and social implications for patients and families, as well as comfort measures. Emergency Paramedic

Students within this program benefit from hands-on experience working in both lab and clinical settings. rams RCAMS facilities include a Human Simulation Lab, where students work with mid and high-fidelity mannequins that can breathe, talk, produce vital signs and simulate the birthing process. Hospital and community placements help students to form a relationship with clients, and solidify their critical thinking skills and professional nursing practice. Clinical experiences are provided in all terms of the program. Clinical locations include, but are not limited to, lab and simulation experiences, hospital and community settings such as long-term care homes, family practice clinics and community nursing agencies. To qualify for clinical placements, students must complete a program-specific Passport to Placement.

Pre-Health Sciences

This program is designed to prepare graduates for admission to certificate or diploma programs at Ontario Colleges in the health sciences or other related programs in the biological or chemical sciences. Supply Chain Management Health

Program Information

The Supply Chain Management RCAMS Graduate Certificate program will enhance the credentials of successful students, enabling them to demonstrate understanding, knowledge, skills and expertise in supply chain to potential employers. It will further provide students with the ability to envision and produce their own supply chain career plan in preparation for employment. This program is accredited by the Canadian Supply Chain Sector Council through its National Accreditation Program, Emphasis is placed upon learning the elements of supply chain strategic planning, network design, materials handling design and applications and operations. PARAMEDIC

The career of a flight paramedic is full of exciting challenges and higher level of responsibilities. Nurses who work in aero-medical emergency or evacuation missions are termed as flight paramedic. They are important part of air rescue team who provide onsite emergency medical care to patients in times of crisis from a mobile response unit, in collaboration with a medical support team including flight nurses and flight physicians, outside the hospital setting. Those who aspire to become a flight paramedic need to attain a certification and get trained as a ground paramedic first. Their jobs include risk of acquiring certain diseases, but they are provided with lucrative salary packages so that they could maintain good lifestyle.

The aspirants must meet the following criteria in order to be flight paramedic:

Procedure to Become Certified Flight Paramedic

Air Ambulance Training PARAMEDIC

Welcome to the first installment in our Air Medical Resource series about the Air Ambulance

For many people in the healthcare field, becoming part of an air medical team is a dream. And it’s easy to understand why. Air ambulance crews fly overhead in glorious flying machines, rescuing people in the nick of time, providing some of the most high-level healthcare to their patients with some of the most advanced medical equipment in existence, and above all, saving and improving the quality of many peoples’ lives As you probably already realize, being part of an air ambulance crew is not a simple job. It can be quite difficult to even make it onto an air ambulance team in the first place. Generally, before you even think of training to become an air ambulance crew member, you’ll want to get in some experience as a ground EMT, paramedic, or similar emergency care provider Air ambulances fill a lot of different roles in the healthcare field, and so the term air ambulance can denote many different things Individual air medical services will often supply all the training you need to become an air ambulance crew member. Typically, these air medical training programs will make sure you know how to perform medical procedures taking into account the environmental variables of being inside the helicopter or fixed-wing aircraft Training may actually be performed by the air ambulance’s own personnel, or a qualified outside party may do the training Lastly, training may be done at an individual level, in small groups, or a large number of personnel may be trained at once. The latter is most common for newer air ambulance companies that are just starting up Just about all (reputable) air ambulance services will want you to have received training and a certain amount of experience as a ground emergency personnel. Types of prior emergency personnel experience that may qualify you for air ambulance training include:

• Emergency Medical Technicians (EMT)
• Firefighters
• Police officers
• Park/Forestry Rangers

Don’t worry, this is not an exhaustive list — there are many job positions that may allow you to receive air ambulance training. Moreover, you may already have training or prior experience in another area that may completely fit the bill for an air ambulance service to train you to be on its crew, but this will obviously depend on the individual company Even if your head’s in the clouds about becoming part of an air ambulance crew, make sure you don’t forget one very important part of air medicine: the ground. Ground training is absolutely essential for all air ambulance personnel, and is actually where you’ll spend a lot of time when you’re not flying In order for an air ambulance to be effective, its personnel must be well-versed in how to take care of things on the ground. This involves a number of things — your training will fill you in on all of them — but some of the most essential ground skills for crew members include loading and unloading patients into the aircraft, working next to aircraft, and verbal and non-verbal communication skills (aircraft engines are loud!) Even inside air ambulances that are designed to be comfortable for patients, for flight nurses, flight paramedics, and other aeromedical personnel, it can easily be one of the most adverse environments you’ll ever provide care within. But for many prospective crew members, that’s part of the allure of the job in Air ambulances will generally provide a few hours of initial training. This may vary considerably depending on the type of air ambulance service (emergency, charter). While only a few hours of training seems surprisingly low for such an important job, most personnel hired by air ambulance companies will already be extremely qualified at performing their jobs. In this way, air medical crews have the potential to be “dream teams” of emergency health care personnel, physicians, and/or specialists. Performing the same kind of procedures adeptly within the environment in and around an aircraft, rather than on the ground or in a (non-flying) hospital, is the new part. Applicants for air medical services must have appropriate licen sure in their state for the role they wish to fill on the team. There are other certificates that you’ll need to have, such as ACLS, BLS, and CPR. Air ambulance companies will have different experience requirements, but most will want 2 or more years of experience as a paramedic or EMT. Air ambulance work is very demanding, and thus a decent amount of physical ability is required. Lifting (and team-lifting) patients and equipment, moving, bending, kneeling, standing, and sometimes being in rather cramped, uncomfortable aircraft interiors are all skills that an effective air medical crew member needs. Verbal and non-verbal communication must be used on the job. Aircraft engines can be incredibly noisy, and you’ll be working in and around the loud air ambulance quite a bit. Understanding medical terminology and being able to process (and act upon) the things your fellow team members are saying in loud, stressful situations is also a necessity.

What is it like to be an air ambulance paramedic?

Being a paramedic means you have so many options open to you once you are qualified. With so many opportunities, it’s going to be a lot of fun trying to decide which option to take, because after all – when deciding to become a paramedic, it’s a life-changing decision. We see people during the worst hour of their lives But if those people survive and I get to meet or hear from them again it’s just amazing. “That’s why we’re in the job and it makes you want to continue.”Most air ambulances exist solely on public donations or by contributions from major corporations. It’s the same story in the UK, where two helicopters, based at Norwich and Cambridge airports, and the crews consist of pilots, critical care paramedics, and doctors are supported by donations. Rod, who joined St John Ambulance as an eight-year old and began work with Norfolk Ambulance (now East of England Ambulance Service) at 21, said 
he began work with the air ambulance because he feeds off the adrenaline of highly-acute incidents. “I was fortunate that before I left the road ambulance I had been to more than my fair share of trauma incidents,” he said. “But I don’t think anything can prepare you for the jobs you go out on. Despite having the opportunity to save lives, Rod does not see his role as a flying paramedic as glamorous – far from it. Sometimes the medical staff encounter patients “determined to die,” while on other occasions he has had to run through woods carrying heavy equipment to get to a patient due to the helicopter being unable to land nearby. The job can be very physical and as demanding as any land based paramedic response team. “We land the rescue chopper anywhere we can,” he said. “We’ve landed on the beach, on roads or in country fields.” Rod said he is glad the ambulance is funded by a charity because it makes the service less bureaucratic and means they have more freedom to purchase their own equipment.

Have you thought about becoming a Flight Paramedic?

As an Air Ambulance Paramedic such as with Air Ambulance Victoria (AAV) in Australia, you’ll be already a qualified paramedic with advanced training and certification such as Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support, Advanced Medical Life Support for instance. Once enrolled, paramedics will then undergo specialist ‘aero-medical care’ training. With AAV, the initial training runs for about six-weeks and concentrates on aviation skills such as aviation medical topics, air safety compliance and regulations, essential helicopter underwater escape training, fire-fighting and of course learning how to control the winch. Once trained as a flight paramedic, there is of course regular ongoing training to make sure the current skills are maintained.
